How to auto start apps in different workspaces?

This may be a newbie question, but after searching through all docs, I
haven't been able to find an answer.

Is it possible at startup to automatically place some applications (e.g.
xterms, etc...) in various workspaces? My .xinitrc file places all the
apps in the top workspace but would like to change this behavior. Is there
a way to pass some info to ctwm to make it work?
