The window manager is not involved in this problem. When you do
a rlogin the env variables LINES and COLUMNS are not passed along
to the remote shell. So, if your xterm is not the default the apps
that rely on them are messed up. You can fix this by doing :
eval `resize`

Don't know how xplaces works (and do), but ctwm doesn't mess with
the window placement (unlike tvtwm or vtwm).

Ctwm doesn't start any clients, xinitrc is responsible for this. But
Occupy and OccupyAll tells where they will show up. For example in your
case xclock will appear in every workspace, and xrolodex only in Home
and Pine.
