   I just tried running xanim, which wanted to use a private colormap,
   but ctwm didn't install the colormap - it was still sharing the colors
   with the rest of the applications (and thus, looking rather awful).

Since it's the X server that handles color maps and such, not your window
manager, it's most unlikely ctwm is to blame.
