Apparently, the rest of KDE sends some messages to the window manager
about things potentially of interest to the window manager. I don't
really know about this, but a few things come to my mind:

  - KDE tells the WM about the usable screen area, so that the WM can
make sure maximized windows don't obstruct the panel.
  - KDE tells the WM about the number of workspaces there are (or if
the number has changed). I think there's a message for workspace
    changes, too.

I'm not sure what other messages there are. But you can quickly see
that this is not the kind of thing where you would have to add
megabytes of code and graphics to the WM.
