I don't want it running in any case. I don't wipe out extra properities
I just add my own. It is gnome that likes to wipe them out!

Gconf got it. But that still does not explain how to effect gnome
configurations.

| is very hard to maintain consistency, especially when using the same
| data on different machines.

That is what I mean.

I'll try that. Making notes.

Though it isn't installed, but I see it on the available packages list.

Hmmm very interesting, except for an editor, it can't delete old usless
entries of things I never run (except as a once only test long ago).
